Classical languages in Austrian schools in the period 1849-1870
Abstract The reform of secondary schools undertaken by the Austrian authorities after the 1848 revolution strengthened the position of Latin and Greek languages in the syllabi of Austrian secondary schools (Gymnasien) and aimed at creating an appropriate balance between humanities and science in school. Several German educationalists contributed importantly to the reform. Especially notable was the classical philologist Hermann Bonitz, who collaborated closely in the secondary school reform, was the founder and first head of the department of classical philology at Vienna University, and the first lecturer of the Greek language. The then philologists and advocates of the classical languages, headed by Bonitz, defended the reform measures and the value of the two classical languages against the criticism of the reform’s opponents.
Stanislav Južnič Hydrodynamics at higher schools in Ljubljana in the 18th century Abstract The article deals with hydrodynamics as taught at higher educational institutions in the second half of the 18th century under the influence of the physicist Bošković. It also provides brief biographies in Slovenian of Ambschell and Gruber, who in the 18th century were the who major physicists in Ljubljana.
Tatjana Hojan Attempts to revive the Slovenian School Publishing Society
Abstract The paper discusses attempts to revive the Slovenian School Publishing Society (Slovenska šolska matica) in 1953. The Slovenian School Society operated from 1900 to the beginning of WWII and published about 200 publications on educational issues. It released 36 Educational Yearbooks and 3 to 4 books each year. In the 1954-1958 period, the Slovenian Teachers’ Association published eight books in the collection “Pedagoška knjižnica”. But owing to the lack of funds it later transferred its publishing activities to the Državna založba Slovenije publishing house.

130 Years of the Agricultural secondary School in Maribor (1872-2002)
Abstract In the 130 years of its existence, i.e. since its establishment on 11 March 1872 until today, the Agricultural Secondary School with its rich history and exceptionally important educational role has significantly influenced Slovenian rural development and the Slovenian nation as a whole. In this time it has had a number of owners, names, study programmes and locations, yet it always managed to remain one of the top Slovenian, Yugoslav and European agricultural schools.

Education and training institutions as the creators and holders of cultural heritage
Abstract The article brings to light information on the new rules governing documentation in education and training institutions and issues related to the preservation of cultural heritage in the form of archival materials. These rules are in fact not always consistent with the legislation regulating archives.

On the history of the Kotlje primary school in the light of school chronicle
Abstract Among the present 46 elementary schools in Slovenian Carinthia besides the school in Kotlje there hardly is any other disposing with so many excellent historical sources. The Slovenian cultural prosperity Kotlje for the first time experienced in the period of the Yugoslav kingdom, again due to a significant share of the headmaster Sokol. He, together with the local parish priest Ivan Serajnik, also founded an agricultural school for the senior pupils. In pedagogical sense all the carinthian elementary schools were influenced by the then European principles of work schools, ardently supported by the district school – inspector Peter Močnik as seen in the notes on his pedagogical inspection of the school in March 1926. The development of this school to the liberation in 1945 was not matching the ever higher number of its pupils; it became a three-class elementary school only in 1929 and the complete elementary school with 8 classes only in the year 1958. Already in 1961 it was for some unwise political reasons joined to the large elementary school in Ravne na Koroškem. All these events are shown in the final pages of the paper.

The regional agricultural and household school at Mala Loka (1930-1944)
Abstract The paper includes the memories of a student attending the Regional Agricultural and Household School at Mala Loka near the town of Trebnje. The school was administered by the school sisters of St. Francis Christ the King, also known as the “school sisters of Maribor”, and operated from 1929 until the end of WWII. The extraordinary memory of the former pupil who attended the school in the 1942/43 school year and the documents preserved from that time give us an insight into the operations of the school, where rural girls acquired practical and theoretical knowledge. The sisters instructed the girls on more general and household subjects, while specialised teachers from the Agricultural School in Grm pri Novem mestu were responsible for agricultural subjects. On the basis of a professionally prepared study programme, the students were divided into four groups, i.e. cooking, dressmaking, household and economic groups. Each group included ten students. Every week they shifted the groups so that every student became familiar with all of these activities.
